Students will use the shape of a bicycle to discuss grade appropriate geometry and measurements
Stand E- Spatial Sense
E1. describe and represent shape, location, and movement by applying geometric properties and spatial relationships in order to navigate the world around them
E2. compare, estimate, and determine measurements in various contexts
This activity would fit into other learning happening in Strand E.
Teachers would incorporate the shapes and angles found in bicycles into their teaching and learning.
This activity would be a part of other learning happening in the class. Younger grades may identify the shapes that are found within a bicycle and their attributes. The class may discuss why these shapes are used - circles for wheels, triangles are in the frame, triangles are strong.
Junior classes may identify the properties of the shapes found within a bicycle. They can find examples of congruence. Students can also identify and compare various angles found in a bicycle and discuss the benefits of the angles- acute angles are stronger than obtuse.
Individual assessment can be done anecdotally for marker/chosen students.
