Review parts of writing/grammar (verbs, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs, nouns) and how each contributes to a coherent and interesting sentence.
Create sentences that are missing different parts of writing/grammar.
Students may read the original story first (read aloud/independently). A possible idea would be to have students identify parts of writing/grammar in the original story. Perhaps circling, or highlighting different aspects of the piece. (highlight all verbs in yellow). Students could then fill in the “Mad Libs” shared below. This can be done as a whole class or independently and shared with a partner.
For older grades, students can create their own “Mad Libs” based on the original story. Students decide the words to omit and have their peers fill in.
For younger grades, teachers can pick a few sentences to fill in as a whole class, pairs or individually.
Because student responses will vary greatly, assessment will be anecdotal and a quick visual assessment ensuring answers filled in make sense. However, student answers can be scored correct or incorrect as well if they substituted the missing word with the correct grammar needed. This will hopefully get a few laughs from your students.
