Students will be grouped into themes/messages from the story (teamwork, patience, encouragement, perseverance, grit, resilience, motivation, kindness). Groups can be random, teacher selected or student selected.
On a large sheet of chart paper (place mat format) students will answer the following questions:
How did the character show this theme?
How do you show it? (text-self)
Where have you see this theme in another character/book (text-text)
Where have you seen this theme in the world (text-world)
Groups can share their answers with the class in either a presentation, or have the chart paper hung up and have the students walk around looking at them (carousel format).
